" Bollywood & Plagiarism "

Plagiarism, or 'inspiration' as Bollywood prefers to call it, has always existed in Bollywood. In case you are wondering what is Bollywood, well again the name is inspired by Hollywood.
Bombay + Hollywood = Bollywood

The only change being now Bombay is called Mumbai. India churns out highest number of movies every year in the whole world. Bollywood movies are often targeted for copying from Hollywood movies. Forget the music, even the scripts and screenplay of most Bollywood movies are copied from Hollywood movies. Many of the movies made in Bollywood are blatantly copied or partially plagiarized (from other movies). Some of them just take some inspiration and some of them are simply a remake and some even go to the extent of copying the original movie scene-by-scene.
Here are some of the Bollywood movies lifted, inspired or copied from Hollywood films...

"Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin 1991" from "It Happened One Night 1934"

"Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar 1992" from "Breaking Away 1979"

"Agni Sakshi 1996" from "Sleeping with the Enemy 1991"

"Chachi 420 1998" from "Mrs. Doubtfire 1993"

"Kahin Pyaar Na Ho Jaaye 2000" from "The Wedding Singer 1998"

"Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya 2001" from "Fatal Attraction 1987"

"Kyo Kii... Main Jhuth Nahin Bolta 2001" from "Liar Liar 1997"

"Raaz 2002" from "What Lies Beneath 2000"

"Jism 2003" from "Body Heat 1981"

"Kucch To Hai 2003" from "I Know What You Did Last Summer 1997"

"Sarkar 2005" from "The Godfather 1972"

"Heyy Babyy 2007" from "Three Men and a Baby 1987"

        "Partner 2007" from "Hitch 2005"

"Dostana 2008" from "I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry 2007"

      "Faltu 2011" from "Accepted 2006"
Honestly today I searched in google for the Bollywood movies copied from Hollywood - and Oh Gosh!!! It's a very huge list. I have seen most of these movies from both Bollywood and Hollywood. And let me tel you guys that some movies are highly copied from scene to scene (the whole plot), while some of the movies have just copied few scenes and some have copied the entire idea.I won't say that Bollywood is not original, because few of the great movies are original stories also, but the list of the Hollywood copied or you may call inspired movies is just too long to mention, tough some of the copied movies may be equal to or even better than the original Hollywood movie. Here are some such movies for you . . .
  • Akele Hum Akele Tum - Kramer Vs Kramer - The whole plot is copied, including the scenes and some of the dialogues. I love both of these movies, and both of these movies were super hits!
  • Dil Hain Ke Manta Nahin - It Happened One Night - Almost 100% copied. Both of these movies were great and super hits!
  • Hum Tum - When Harry Met Sally & Before Sunset - Not a 100% copy but some of the scenes and the idea of the plot has been copied.
  • Satte Pe Satta - Seven Brides for Seven Brothers - The plot is slightly copied, I liked both!
  • Sarkar part 1 and 2 - The Godfather - Tough I liked Sarkar, but I must say NOBODY can touch "The Godfather." Everything is perfect in that movie, including the Theme Song and the actors like Al Pacino. However, Amitabh Bachchan was the only actor who I think matched the Godfather.
  • Omkara - Othello - Both are great!
  • Murder - Unfaithful - I liked Unfaithful more.

    P
ersonally I feel that Even if we are adapting or copying, at least credits should be given to the original, so that they don't feel cheated or offended.

" Hollywood Films Have Inspiration For Hindi Film Industry "

Mehboob Khan's masterpiece Mother India, starring Nargis , Sunil Dutt, Raaj Kumar and Rajendra Kumar, made cinematic history in 1957. But even this classic had shades of Pearl S Buck's The Good Earth. Right from cult classics like Baazi (1951) to Sholay (1975) and Baazigar (1993) - and even Ghajini (2008) - all have some western movie as the stimulus. Guru Dutt's debut Baazi was inspired by the Rita Hayworth starrer Gilda (1946), while Sholay is widely called an 'Indian curry Western film', with inspiration from seven Hollywood films including - Once Upon A Time In The West (1968), Spaghetti Westerns, The Wild Bunch (1969), Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (1973) and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969). Baazigar and Ghajini are said to be Indianised versions of A Kiss Before Dying (1991) Memento (2000) respectively. Paa supposedly draws its plot from the 1996 comedy-drama Jack, about a boy who ages faster than normal due to a disease, while Akshay Kumar-starrer Action Replay is an alleged take-off on the reverse-ageing drama The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Thus It would be very true to say that there has been a constant borrowing of ideas between the two industries.
And as far as personal choice is concerned, some of my favorite Originals are -

The biggest motivation for making a successful movie is that it brings money and appreciation. So filmmakers go for a tried and tested formula by taking inspiration from Hollywood. Maybe It's the lack of scripts and proper writers that is making Indian filmmakers copy Hollywood. I feel there is no dearth of content here, It's only a question of shortcut that the filmmakers take because they want a ready script. . .

" Foggy Days & Mushy Love "

What are cold foggy days without watching sum good romantic mushy movies- the perfect combination & a cup of hot coffee to top it . And especially for a movie buff like me such movies that are full of passion, love & romance are a true bliss in this winter season when the temperature outside is dropping. Not only do such movies instigate the inner emotions, but actually also help warm the body in cold.

It is very truly said that human heart is the hub of love, passion, romance, affection, feelings & emotions. Romance has an eternal presence & is a timeless entity that remains intact against all odds. Therefore, romantic movies across all countries and all languages never grow old. Rather, they feel like a breath of fresh air. Some such must have movies for all movie lovers, which I also personally love are When Harry met Sally, The Notebook, Sleepless in Seattle, Ever After, Love Actually, Titanic, The Proposal, 50 First Dates, Ghost, Notting Hill, An Affair to Remember, PS: I Love you, Bridget Jones Diary, If Only, A walk to remember and many many more, the list could actually go on and on.

Some romantic flicks depict passionate love affair. The stories of some romantic flicks of are full of twists – passion, deception, betrayal and revenge. All romantic movies are not merely emotional drama. Some are funny whereas some are touching. They are spicy, soft and soothing. Romantic movies are of different genres – classic romance and modern day romance. Hollywood romantic movies are an all-time craze with movie lovers of all times. Some specific movies, even if they were made decades back, are alive and kicking with the youngsters of today’s generation. The never-fading romantic aura of these Hollywood flicks touches the depth of one’s heart with the similar overwhelming impact as in those days.

Romantic movies are a great watch specially when coupled with awesome weather. And as deep inside my conscious i know that these lazy cold & foggy days are here to stay for atleast a few more days , I really want all of us to enjoy these to the fullest. And of course what's better for a movie lover than spending these long cold nights in the blanket watching some classic & passion filled romantic movies. So as I plan to treat myself with a stack of such movies that I've collected, here's wishing you all happy foggy days & cold nights and hoping that you make full use of it by watching all of these awesome movies :) :) :)
